The Art of Positive Fatalism – Lessons from Kinshasa is a new book by Lukas Pairon, the founder of the international research organization SIMM (Social Impact of Making Music). The book grows from his postdoctoral research, conducted in Kinshasa, DRC in 2024 and 2025, exploring two social music projects: a brass band of former “witch” children and a traditional percussion ensemble composed of former members of violent gangs. His study of these projects revealed how mastering musical instruments and repertoire empowers young people, helping them navigate their constrained realities and achieve a remarkable capacity to make things work, an art form he calls “positive fatalism.”
