In the city where LiberaMusica operates—Pesaro, Italy, right on the Mediterranean coast—the connection with nature is strong and part of everyday life. From the Apennine Mountains to the coastline, children grow up surrounded by an environment that is rich, fragile, and, today more than ever, in need of protection. In recent years, our region has been marked by extreme events: floods, droughts, and changing seasons are reshaping our landscape. Schools and associations have been working hard to raise ecological awareness, and LiberaMusica wanted to contribute by doing what we know best: making music.

In the heart of Chilean Patagonia, the strings of a violin resonate deep within the temperate forest. Birds sing in harmony with the refined sounds of bows gliding over the strings; leaves whisper centuries-old stories. The Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, where endangered species are protected, also embraces a group of young musicians—along with their mentors, who are string principals in the Brussels Philharmonic—during daily rehearsals and performances. Working in this field has shown us how a diverse, inclusive curriculum can activate a student’s passion and sense of self. At Sistema Toronto, our goal is to have repertoires that represent our students and the communities they live in. With that in mind, Sistema Toronto invited Juno-nominated reggae artist Jah’Mila to work with students at our Jane Finch Centre this March as part of a months-long exploration of reggae music titled Reggae Roots. Our students spent January and February preparing for three days of workshops led by Jah’Mila and a culminating concert.

During the two magical years I spent in Jamaica as a child, my aunt would visit our house every Thursday evening after work. That dinner table is where I first fell in love with Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, and my family still talks about those Thursday nights we spent together.

Ask any director of a music for social impact program about the program’s mission and goals, and you will receive an impassioned response about helping children, teaching music, inspiring minds, saving lives, building community, and developing social-emotional skills. There is clarity in what we all aim to achieve, built on a vision of happy students and families, beautiful music coming from every corner of a school, and meaningful stories of positively impacting children’s lives. Our vision includes accolades from school leaders or even government officials and others who are inspired by this work.

Una de las experiencias más memorables de mi estancia en Vanimo fue ayudar a los estudiantes a preparar la música para una ocasión verdaderamente especial: la visita, el pasado agosto, del Papa Francisco. Con solo tres semanas para prepararse, los estudiantes fueron capaces de montar tanto un concierto completamente grabado para el Santo Padre como algunas piezas en directo para su visita a los Padres del IVE en Baro.

En este tipo de actos, es fácil pensar que la palabra "comunidad" se refiere a las personas que hay en la sala. Pero el ingenioso truco de El Sistema USA fue invertir esa idea. En lugar de celebrar nuestra En lugar de celebrar nuestra comunidad profesional -los vínculos que establecemos con nuestros colegas-, el equipo directivo de ESUSA exploró los lazos que nos unen a comunidades más amplias y diversas: de familias, de activistas, de científicos, de legisladores y de la gente a la que los legisladores tienden a ignorar.
