GLI Imagined Community Concert: “Our City, Our Stage” at Community MusicWorks

04-05-2023

The events we imagined for “Our City, Our Stage” intend to honor CMW’s rich legacy of gathering community voices, centering relationships, and highlighting artistic pathways. In short, we wanted to help CMW coalesce more fully with its surrounding community. With that in mind, we designed preparatory activities for the community to enjoy together—activities such as community listening sessions, organized by youth leaders, that lead to the creation of mini murals based on community feedback.

Attention of a Different Kind

04-05-2023

Think about how much time you and your team spend fighting for attention—from funders, from government officials, from community members. Working so hard to keep your programs going and growing. You put in that time because it’s necessary; programs can’t thrive without it. But all that management and self-promotion can deplete our ability to forge the connective pathways that sustain and push our work further.

Inner Development Goals: The Keys to Sustainable Development on a Global Scale

04-05-2023

Most of us believe that teaching artists are the missing piece in building a sustainable future. But what if our field is missing something as well—a bridge that could connect our artistic mission with effective policymaking and systemic change? For many years, I certainly felt that some sort of stepping stone was missing. And then, last year, I was introduced to what I believe to be a game-changer during the International Teaching Artist Conference—ITAC6—in Oslo: The Inner Development Goals (IDGs).

In Brazil, the Joyful Noise of a Hundred Teachers Learning Together

04-05-2023

There are not many cities—even world capitals—that have a government-supported program to develop children’s orchestras and choirs in public schools. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is one city that does have such a program: IBME, Instituto Brasileiro de Música e Educação, which helps to support youth and children’s ensembles in over fifty schools throughout the city.

Sistemang Pilipino: A Decade of Continuous Learning

04-05-2023

The story of the El Sistema–inspired program Sistemang Pilipino began quietly in April 2013 at an orphanage in Cebu City, Philippines. A mixed group of 21 music teachers, students, and musicians all began together with a teacher training workshop led by Graciela Briceno, a Sistema Fellow based in Boston, MA, in the United States.

Q&A: Jazz Hands For Autism Teacher-in-Training Tyler Roberts on Classroom Management, Confidence, and Booking Gigs

04-05-2023

Downtown Los Angeles usually sees about ten inches of rain for the season. As of this writing, we’re 12 inches ahead of schedule.

Happily, the recent precipitation hasn’t dampened Tyler Roberts’ spirits. He’s got a lot to beam about: he’s the sunny spot at the center of a classroom at Kayne Eras Center in Culver City, CA, where he teaches drums to five spunky elementary students. Tyler’s smile lights up the room and his laid-back, inquisitive nature serves both him and his students well.

Let’s get to know a bit about Tyler, his gift for teaching, and what’s on his horizon.

The Ambassadors’ Exchange: (Re)Introductions

04-05-2023

Since this month is about introductions and reintroductions, the Ambassadors played multiple games on Discord to help the team coalesce. For example, we played Skribbl.io (a drawing-based guessing game, like Pictionary) and “Would You Rather?” One revelation from “Would You Rather?”: the Ambassadors would all prefer to see a popular music concert over a classical concert. To cap off the month, the Ambassadors were tasked with writing a short introduction about themselves as an exercise in self-reflection and community.
