The Importance of Free Play in Music Education

In my doctoral work, I did an instrumental case study of the Music Box Village in New Orleans. This alternative music space wears many hats. It functions as a music venue, learning space, playground, and much more. It includes interactive art installation and instruments made from salvaged materials that form a kind of sonic playground. It’s also widely welcoming: when I was observing grade-four children playing in the space, I noticed that multiple intelligences were accepted and fostered.

While our daily lives are rattled by increasing global instability, polarization, and apathy, culture workers working toward youth empowerment and social change share many of the same questions. How do we empower young people without transferring unreasonable responsibility? How do we equip and motivate while acknowledging legitimate, sometimes harsh realities? How do we facilitate interconnectedness, in times of global dehumanization?

I’d been missing the presence and perspective of young people in these gatherings dedicated to arts education, young people’s wellbeing, and community health through the arts. When young people were present, it was most often as performers, and occasionally as panelists alongside adults.

Throughout these events, I had been wondering, “How is it that we continue to position young people as objects of conversation, and not the subject?”

Para muchas organizaciones ajenas a nuestra comunidad común, el liderazgo se considera un título o una función formal, algo a lo que aspirar profesionalmente. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de la capacitación de los jóvenes, significa algo más. Lo vemos en las acciones, hábitos y mentalidades cotidianas que capacitan a las personas para marcar la diferencia. Para nosotros, el liderazgo consiste en inspirar a los demás simplemente viviendo tus valores.

En Enabling Leadership (EL), nos esforzamos por apoyar a los jóvenes en su camino hacia esas acciones y valores.
