The Ambassadors’ Exchange: April 2022 Updates

04-06-2022

The 2022 Ambassadors are excited to bring you news from several different pockets of the world! This month, we share updates about recent performances and some especially thoughtful reflections on the meaning of music in our lives. We hope that you take the time to read our articles.

Relationships, the Bedrock of Community Art

04-06-2022

Too long have we seen ourselves and the world—almost unconsciously—through the metaphor of an elaborate, sophisticated machine. We do this to gain a sense of efficiency and control, and the results have been powerful, leading to remarkable achievements over the past few centuries. But this framework has come at a cost, undermining the more organic qualities and properties of who we are and what makes us healthy, happy, productive, and connected—those things “not measured in GDP,” as Robert F. Kennedy famously pointed out.

Attention, Paid Forward

03-02-2022

The idea of attention has gained significant traction in the last few years—in particular, the idea that we might be less able to pay attention in the new landscape within which our lives now unfold. While concern about human attention spans may be as old as black thread, there’s enough scientific evidence and lived experience to believe that the current focus on our perennial struggle to pay attention may be at an all-time high.

The Ambassadors’ Exchange: Designing Our New Logo

03-02-2022

This month, The Ensemble Ambassadors worked together to create a logo that represented the heart and spirit of the program.

Who’s Listening?

02-02-2022

Music and speech are our mediums for this, but we don’t always need a sound in order to listen. Presence is the true instrument we all play. Presence can be as loud or as soft, as busy and complex, or as simple and sparse as we please. Presence allows everything to matter; it is not beholden to budgets or equipment.

Pandemic, Interrupted

01-05-2022

On the first Thursday of December 2021, I did something I hadn’t done for the previous 20 months: I taught six piano students in a row in person, in my home studio. After 16 months of virtual teaching, I had been gradually reintroducing in-person lessons during the fall, one kid at a time, as they became vaccinated. This was the first day that every student on my roster was actually on my piano bench.

Global Working Conditions for Musicians: An Unchanged Status Quo

12-01-2021

Even as many of our grassroots initiatives declare the importance of supporting musician change-makers—and call for our institutions to actively participate in that support through their practices—the attitude of those core institutions seems unchanged, even after two years on hold. The high global incidence of orchestra dismissals is distressing, as is the non-transparency of some orchestras and conservatories.
