Looking beyond Music: Empowering Students to Ignite Change at Project 440

The first note an audience hears at any symphonic concert comes in at 440 Hz—the pitch A. Typically, the oboe plays this first pitch, followed by the rest of the orchestra as the tuning routine begins. Whether performing Bach concerto or Vivaldi suite, they will perform in tune, thanks to that first tuning pitch.

Virtual Fair of Universities, Colleges and Music Festivals

Project 440 will host its fourth annual free college fair for musicians virtually, Tuesday, November 10 – Thursday, November 12. This fair brings together representatives from universities, conservatories, colleges, and summer music festivals from across the country to connect directly with emerging youth leaders interested in music. Inclusive in this three-day event are workshops on financial aid, admission processes, different careers in music, and more. Students and adults can both register; learn more here.

Student Voices Take the Lead during YOLA National at Home

For close to a decade, the month of July has meant national Sistema gatherings hosted by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and this year was no different—except that it was extremely different, because it was all virtual: YOLA National at Home.

YOLA National at Home, this year’s online version of the annual YOLA National Festival and Symposium, offers keynotes (Thomas Wilkins and Gustavo Dudamel), community and artist conversations, teaching tools, and project-based learning opportunities for youth and adults. Students, educators, and artists are invited into these interactive experiences, held 3–4 times per week over Zoom and YouTube Live from July 10–31. Register for updates here. YOLA is also partnering with Project 440 to provide musicians of the YOLA National Festival Orchestras with a six-week virtual program on using art as a vehicle for positive change and how to prepare for college or conservatory.
