From ITAC to ITAAC: Celebrating Teaching Artist Administrators in Oslo

10-05-2022

Many artists and teaching artists devote their educational development to artistic study, eschewing (or at least minimizing) the operational learning our field demands. But the ones “brave” enough to transition into administrative positions tend to deliver outstanding results. The reason for this, in my opinion, lies in the arts themselves. The vast set of soft skills developed through artistic instruction, performance, and teaching gives teaching artists strong differentiators in their managerial abilities. It’s just that many don’t yet know it.

Last week, ITAC6—the Sixth International Teaching Artist Conference—brought together over two hundred teaching artists from 36 countries at a gathering in Oslo, Norway. During 60 in-person working sessions and many activities offered both in person and online, two clear messages rang out.

New Project Connects TAs across Asia

09-15-2021

Singapore-based teaching artist Jeffrey Tan is exploring ways that fellow TAs can advocate for inclusive arts practice in Asia, through his ITAC-funded program Teaching Artist Asia. The project seeks to document, map, and advocate for TAs working across the region, exploring inclusive practice and collaborating with the sector’s disability community. As part of the project, Tan and a series of guest speakers host monthly online sessions that unpack the unique ways that TAs in Asia approach their work. Sessions are free to attend, and the next one is September 27. View the schedule via ITAC to get involved. The project’s findings will be shared at the ITAC6 Conference in Oslo in 2022.

ITAC Think Tanks: Join Monthly Conversations with International Colleagues

08-18-2021

The International Teaching Artist Collaborative (ITAC) continues to host monthly Think Tank sessions for those looking to learn from and share with their international colleagues. Each session is led by a teaching artist from a different part of the world, who offers insight and moderates discussions around topics pertinent to the field. Sessions are listed through February ‘22; the next Think Tank takes place on Tuesday, August 31 (time TBA), and will explore teaching artistry’s role in developing “Future Literacy, Future Fluency, Future Competency, and Future Consciousness.” Some Think Tanks lead directly into working groups of artists from around the world who are passionate about a topic, and together they take on field-changing projects. Registration is free and easy through this ITAC Google Form, and archived sessions are available on their website.

ITAC Introduces the Knowledge Sharing and Digital Learning Project

09-16-2020

The ITAC Collaborative goes all year round, extending the work of the ITAC Conferences. Earlier this year the ITAC Collaborative invited (and financially supported) six Innovators to lead projects designed to add tools, share resources, and build connections supporting the global teaching artist field. Creative Generation was selected to produce the “Knowledge Sharing and Digital Learning Project,” which addresses the gap in research and resources produced by and for the field of teaching artistry. The project will engage volunteers in the field from a cross-section of countries to collect, validate, and disseminate tools, resources, and creative/scholarly research in several capacities. As part of this project, an international Advisory Committee has been assembled from practitioners who applied from around the world. Find out more about the project and its international team of teaching artist advisors here.

From the Editor

Do you think of yourself as a teaching artist? Many teachers in the global Sistema use that term to describe what they do. Sometimes, though, there can be a lack of clarity about what it means – and a lack of awareness that there is, in fact, a powerful and growing global movement for Teaching Artistry, just as there is for El Sistema.
