Grammy Awards Recognize Music’s Social Impact

This year’s Grammy Awards surprised us by creating a new category: Best Song for Social Change.  Over 130,000 songwriters across the world submitted their songs. The winning song, “Baraye” (“For the Sake Of”), was written by Iranian musician Shervin Hajipour in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in morality police custody, which has sparked women-led protests across Iran. Despite his arrest and impending trial, Hajipour’s song has reached many millions of people, demonstrating music’s unique power to fight injustice.

The Grammys also celebrated youth music education, awarding the Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance to the NY Youth Symphony—the first youth orchestra to receive the award. Produced by Grammy-winner Judith Sherman, their debut, self-titled album celebrates Black American women composers. What’s more, they managed to produce the album while physically distanced during the pandemic. Check out this mini documentary on their creative recording process.
