Two New Books on Music Therapy and Displaced People

10-01-2025

Two new books examine the use of music therapy with people who have experienced forced displacement, highlighting the importance of historical and contextual knowledge of how music can both help and harm people. Music, Music Therapy and Refugees by Dr. Sami Alanne explores how music therapists and healthcare professionals can support refugees and victims of torture, with an understanding of how music has also been used to manipulate and oppress people throughout history. Music Therapy with Displaced Persons, edited by Elizabeth Coombes, Samuel Gracida, and Emma Maclean, examines various ways that music and music therapy can respond to the needs of displaced people across different global settings. Both books are available in digital and hardcopy formats.
