New Documentary Film Tells Story of Deaf Musicians

The new documentary film El Canto de las Manos goes behind the scenes of a 2022 production of Beethoven’s Fidelio, performed in sign language for the first time in honor of the deaf composer. Conductor Gustavo Dudamel staged the opera in Barcelona, Spain with the Manos Blancas Choir, an ensemble of deaf musicians from Venezuela. Directed by Maria Valverde, the documentary follows the experiences of three members of the choir, inviting audiences into intimate moments from their lives.
