Foster Invests in the Next Generation of African Music

06-21-2023

Foster, a new initiative launched on June 2 by the African Music Library, is expanding opportunities for African music education in primary and secondary schools across the continent. The program aims to reach students who lack access to music education by providing musical instruments, training teachers, and creating sustainable music programs. The African Music Library, which began as a platform to preserve, catalogue, and create exchanges around African music, argues that there is currently a low level of awareness and appreciation of African music in schools. By centering curricula on African music, the program strives to preserve the continent’s rich musical heritage and help cultivate the next generation of African musicians. Their first project works with students at Akoba Primary School in Lagos, Nigeria, with plans to expand to more schools in the future.
