Daniel Barenboim Speaks About the Power of Music against Conflict

Conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim shared some powerful words in a recent interview with the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, sharing how musicians can pave the way toward cultural understanding during times of conflict. Barenboim draws on the example of his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which offers a safe space for Arab and Israeli musicians to come together, exchange ideas, and create music. While many may feel powerless in the face of the current conflict in the Middle East, Barenboim’s orchestra offers hope that a path to understanding is possible through cooperative creativity.
