We form strong bonds with the young people in our programs, sometimes in ways we don’t even realize. In light of that fact, we’re grateful for this personal essay by Jason Madison, a seventh-year member of Richmond, California’s RYSE Youth Center. His piece is a rich and honest account of his growth at RYSE—in particular, the wonderful friendship he developed with a counselor there. For a reminder of the power of safe spaces and the tenacity of the young people we serve, read Jason’s essay “Strong Lightning” on RYSE’s website.
