Songs to Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day

08-17-2022

How often do your students learn songs by Indigenous Peoples?

August 9 is recognized by the United Nations as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This day serves as a reminder of the injustices committed against Indigenous Peoples and of their essential role as changemakers and stewards of endangered languages, cultures, and lands. In honor of the occasion, author Melissa Vida has curated a selection of songs by Indigenous Peoples in her article for Global Voices. We hope this selection provides some musical inspiration that helps your program connect with and celebrate Indigenous Peoples worldwide. You might also consider ways to invite the representation and musical contributions of Indigenous Peoples in your community; in case you missed it, last month’s Basket provides an example of such a collaboration, between Sistema Toronto and Métis fiddler Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk.
