Yo-Yo Ma Offers a Message of Hope for Afghan Musicians

04-20-2022

We’re heartened to share an update from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) following our coverage of their evacuation last year. At the end of March, internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma visited ANIM students, who are now relocated in Portugal; in addition to sharing words of encouragement with the young musicians, he joined them for a performance of Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik. ANIM is now in the process of re-establishing itself in Lisbon as part of a wider center for Afghan culture. Learn more about Ma’s visit via ABC News. Dr. Ahmad Sarmast (Founder and leader of ANIM) will be a special guest, alongside four students, at the Academy for Impact through Music’s Leadership Circle international gathering in Lisbon at the end of April.
