New Orleans Students Lead Second Line to Honor Uvalde Victims

06-15-2022

Music’s healing potential was on display in New Orleans last month, as students, teachers, and community members came together to honor the lives lost in the Uvalde school shooting. Dozens of children led a musical procession through the city streets, participating in what’s known as a Second Line—in this case, a jazz funeral procession that brings community members together to heal. The event also advocated for a safer future: gun violence remains a pressing issue in New Orleans, as it is across the U.S. In the wake of the Uvalde tragedy, shared musical experiences like these are critical in helping young people feel the support of their community.
