Batuta Students Perform in Music Festivals Around the World

09-15-2018

“For the National Batuta Foundation in Colombia, the international exchange of its participants in different music training programs around the world represents a unique opportunity to provide new knowledge, break mental boundaries, and generate hope for a better future within the brightest young musicians of Batuta.  It is, therefore, a mechanism that promotes meaningful social mobility and generates fully cultural citizens,” commented Para María Claudia Parias Durán, Executive President of the National Batuta Foundation.

This past summer, thirteen participants from various music ensembles represented Colombia in festivals and international cultural exchanges in Brazil, the United States and Italy.  These initiatives provided new opportunities for children from vulnerable populations and contributed to the strengthening of their musical training processes and their emotional and social development, since they were able to interact with peers from different regions of the world and develop mutual learning dynamics.

Chamber Music Festival in California, United States

Violist Luis Felipe Rocha from Bogotá and violinist Luis Ángel Contreras of Cúcuta traveled on July 21 to the United States to be part of the Pacific Crest Music Festival in the state of California. Their visit was made possible thanks to a scholarship awarded by the Festival, which allowed them to join a string orchestra of 20 musicians from Canada, the United States, and Mexico, participate in a musical residency, receive private classes, and deepen their learning of chamber music together with world-class professionals.

Exchange of musical knowledge in Brazil

From the Colombian Pacific, ten students of Batuta in Chocó and Rancho Aparte traveled to Salvador de Bahía, the cultural center of Brazil, to share the musical tradition of this region, thanks to the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia in the development of its Sports and Cultural Diplomacy initiative.

This meeting took place 20-29 July.  Young people shared experiences with members of one of the most important musical and social programs of the Government of the State of Bahia, NEOJIBA, along with the Afro-Brazilian groups Olodum and Ilê Aiyê. The Bahia Carnival, like the Fiestas de San Pacho de Quibdó, was declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity Event. Check out a short video of this cultural exchange below:
