Study Highlights Unique Challenges Faced by Young Musicians in Rural Areas

New research from Mandy Hughes, educator and filmmaker at Australia’s Southern Cross University, raises awareness about the challenges faced by rural youth aspiring to play classical music, including a lack of specialist teachers and like-minded peers and expensive long-distance travel to music camps and auditions. Hughes calls on more initiatives to help bridge these gaps, such as the Regional Youth Orchestra NSW, which brings rural youth together for intensive residential music camps where they make essential contact with peers and mentors.
