The New YOLA Center

09-02-2018

The first building ever designed entirely for a Sistema-inspired program in the United States, the YOLA Center at Inglewood, is now under construction in Los Angeles.  The YOLA Center will be the fourth program site for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, and will also provide space for citywide YOLA rehearsals and events. The site is a former bank building that has been completely redesigned by Frank Gehry, one of the world’s most famous architects and the designer of the Disney Concert Hall, home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The $14.5 million renovation will allow the Center, named for donors Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen, to provide a range of musical opportunities; the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Inglewood will be invited to use the new spaces when YOLA isn’t working in them.

Learn more about the space in this Los Angeles Times article by Mark Swed.

In Swed’s article, he notes the significance of this new space for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the organization that followed Music Director Gustavo Dudamel’s lead to create YOLA.  He quotes the L.A. Phil’s new CEO Simon Woods as saying, “The L.A. Phil will no longer be an orchestra with two iconic homes. Along with Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, there will be a third.”
