Around the Sistema World with Hannah

Hannah Whitehouse

Editor’s Note: Hannah Whitehouse won the extraordinary Circumnavigator’s Travel Study Grant at Northwestern University to study El Sistema-inspired programs around the world during her summer break.  Are you feeling the same admiration and envy that we do?  Hannah will write an article for every issue of The World Ensemble during her world tour, to take us along, as much as the space in her luggage allows.  She will share her impressions and discoveries.  Happy adventuring, Hannah.

I was fifteen years old. It was the summer of 2012. My dad and I were making the sixteen hour drive up to Interlochen Arts Camp, and I was surfing the web on my iPhone. I began browsing TED talks, when one caught my eye: “The El Sistema music revolution”. For the next seventeen minutes, I sat in awe listening to José Antonio Abreu discuss his founding of a program that changed lives through music. As Maestro Abreu explained the program of social rescue, its structure, and the cultural impact that it has on the people of Venezuela, I grew more and more captivated by the model.

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a music teacher, and I had always been ardent regarding different social issues. The idea of a model that combined my two passions–social transformation through the medium of music education–completely shifted my life aspirations. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to work in the field of El Sistema. When I arrived home from camp, I got my hands on every resource I could find. I read Tricia Tunstall’s Changing Lives, browsed El Sistema website pages and journals, and scanned all of the news articles even remotely related to El Sistema. Even during my college search, I took into account each university’s proximity to an El Sistema or Sistema-inspired program, in hopes of landing an internship.

Fast-forward to the summer of 2018 – and the beginning of a trip I couldn’t have imagined six years ago: I’m embarking on a trip around the world to study El Sistema programs in six different countries on four different continents.  I just completed my junior year at Northwestern University, near Chicago (where I’m pursuing degrees in Music Education and Social Policy), and I have received a once-in-a-lifetime Circumnavigators Travel Study Grant to travel the world as a 2018 Foundation Scholar. My aim is to do a collective case study, to document best practices of El Sistema and discover how the El Sistema model of music education manifests itself across the globe.

With the support of Eric Booth, and of Dr. Sarah Bartolome at Northwestern, I’ve connected with Sistema programs throughout the world, and I will be travelling to England, Greece, Kenya, India, the Philippines, and New Zealand.  I will stay in each country for approximately two weeks, visiting one or two El Sistema programs. On site, I will conduct interviews, complete ethnographic observations, examine material culture, and help out around each program in order to become as immersed in the community as possible during my short stay.  My ultimate goal is inspire the formation of more El Sistema programs around the world, to change the life trajectories of more children.

I would like to invite readers of the World Ensemble to accompany me on my travels by reading my blog here – I’ll be posting regularly, reporting on what I discover in each new country about the impact of music on the lives of communities.  Come along with me!

¡Ven conmigo!
