New Study to Explore Singing with Young Refugees

01-18-2023

Research tells us that refugees are especially at risk of developing mental illness. Fortunately, evidence also shows that singing can help counteract those risks. In recognition of music’s critical role in supporting young people with refugee experience, the Sing Up Foundation has commissioned a new research study to examine the impact of singing on the mental health of refugee children and unaccompanied minors. Led by a team from the University of Limerick’s Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, the study is supported by the British Council and builds on their World Voice projects with young refugees in Greece and Palestine. Ultimately, the project will produce a literature review of the benefits of singing on the mental health of young refugees, recommendations on best practices in setting up projects, and a collection of research accessible to organizations working in this field.
