The Composer Project Breaks Down Barriers

12-21-2022

The representation of women and BIPOC composers in classroom music is falling far behind the number of students in school bands and orchestras with these same backgrounds. United Sound, a nonprofit committed to social change through music, is tackling the issue’s root causes with their new initiative, The Composer Project. Supporting emerging composers from underrepresented groups in creating and bringing their music into classrooms, the initiative will offer mentorship, free masterclasses, and partnerships that enable composers to develop and record their music. In order to address issues of access across all stakeholder groups, they will also share published lists and musical recordings from underrepresented composers, including free musical resources for lower-income schools.
