The Song that Captured a Movement

10-19-2022

If you’ve been following the recent protests in Iran connected to the death of Mahsa Amini, you may have seen the name of musician Shervin Hajipour. His clever and moving song “Baraye” (Because Of), composed of tweets protesting human rights violations in Iran, has captured the world’s attention. In setting the words of his fellow Iranians to music, Hajipour elevated important human rights issues to an international stage, risking his own safety in the process. This is such a powerful example of how the arts can penetrate to convey hard truths and engender solidarity—please share the song with others. A campaign has also been launched to nominate the song for a Grammy under their new category, Best Song for Social Change.
