Sistema Toronto Celebrates Indigenous Music

07-20-2022

A recent project from Sistema Toronto connected students with a local artistic tradition, Métis Fiddle Music, in order to expand their understanding of Indigenous music of the region. Through workshops led by acclaimed Métis fiddler Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk, the SOCAN Foundation-funded project introduced students to traditional Métis music and culture. Students were taught “Walter Flett’s Red River Jig,” which has been referred to as the unofficial Métis national anthem. As so many of us seek to decolonize our music education curricula, this performance shares one way of connecting students with the cultural history of their region. View the final performance and learn more about Métis fiddling on Sistema Toronto’s Facebook page.
