Suggested Reading: Developing Your Musical Mental Map

Developing Your Musical Mental Map is more than just a good read for string educators; it also explores ways to support all young musicians in developing their artistry. Based on the research of Professor Melissa Berber Knecht from Michigan’s Hillsdale College, the book challenges the idea that expertism comes naturally to some and not others, asserting that it can be strengthened by creating “schemas” and “chunking” musical material. Though the research is based in string pedagogy and classical music, it employs useful techniques that help students build stronger mental maps across the board, including “melodic patterns to chart musical sound” and tracking exercises for agile note-reading. Learn more about the book in this interview with Knecht at Violinist.
