The Impact of Colonialism on Diverse Musical Cultures: An Interview with Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo

02-17-2021

In a recent interview with the organization Decolonizing the Music Room, Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo, a professor of Ethnomusicology and African Studies at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), gives an interesting perspective on how the arts field should treat and interact with diverse musical traditions. He speaks on how colonialism and Western influences have historically attempted to eradicate the music and customs of Western-occupied regions, and how those regions’ musical traditions survived through those who escaped religious conversion campaigns. The interview also explores how artists and educators can practice more intentionality when examining and performing music from diverse cultures. Read the full interview on the DTMR website.
