Getting Smarter about Praising Students

Growth mindset. The psychological research on its importance makes it a priority for all Sistema programs to understand and pursue.  But conservatory teaching is often the opposite of growth mindset practices, so conservatory-trained Sistema teachers have the challenge of teaching in ways different from the ways they were taught.  This is one of the biggest problems in our global field.

Giving praise is one of the key areas of focus.  Without realizing it, many Sistema teachers praise students in ways that damage their learning, even when given kindly and with a good heart.  This article in Education Update by Britt Hawthorne, a Montessori school teacher and racial justice educator, helps Sistema teachers become more conscious about ways to give praise that benefit their students by developing a growth mindset.

For example, a teacher may use this type of praise to get other students to follow directions:

“I really like how quietly Tiara lined up. Thank you, Tiara.”

But this type of praise can feed insecurity (students need approval to know where they stand with the teacher) and seeds divisiveness among learners.

The teacher can instead say:

“Everyone join me in lining up so we can enjoy our snack break.”

Another example:

Instead of saying, “Yes, I love your bow hold.”

Say, “Do you love your bow hold? Tell me what you love about it.”
