A Mi Maestro Concert: Gustavo Dudamel honors Maestro Abreu

07-02-2018

Maestro Gustavo Dudamel and an international group of musicians came together on 28 June for a musical homage to José Antonio Abreu, Dudamel’s personal mentor and the man behind Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema, who passed away in March 2018.

The A mi Maestro concert, conducted by Dudamel, celebrated Maestro Abreu’s memory and the hundreds of El Sistema-inspired programs around the world. Joining Dudamel was an orchestra made up of musicians from Vienna, Berlin, Los Angeles and Gothenburg, playing side-by-side with the Youth and Children’s Orchestras Foundation of Chile (FOJI) and the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, in the spirit of building bridges and uniting cultures through music. The concert program featured some of Abreu’s favorite symphonic works: the first act Prelude from Wagner’s Lohengrin, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, and Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.

The performance was live-streamed through Facebook and may be published at a future date.
