EDITORIAL: Designing Authentic Sistema Concerts

Sistema concerts.  What should they be like?

Authenticity equals power in the performing arts.  Artists who try to appear as something that they aren’t come across as weak, or worse.  So, the challenge in designing and delivering culminating concerts in Sistema-inspired programs is creating an embodiment of the Sistema ideal in concert format.  Crystallizing the complexity of social development into the brief symbol of the concert format.

The concert is a symbol of Sistema ideals.  The etymology of the word “symbol” comes from an ancient Greek tradition.  When a host had a particularly good visit with guests, he (yes, official hosting was a male domain at that time) took a coin or ring and broke it, giving each departing guest a piece of it.  This piece was called the symbollon—a tangible specific part that represents a connection to an absent shared whole.  The Sistema concert is the tangible part of a program that reconnects the whole community (the families and others who join at the concert) to the shared ideals that all Sistema programs hold dearest.

Since Sistema programs are different than traditional youth orchestra programs, the concerts must be different in some way.  How can a program embody its Sistema-ness in concert?  The form of the concert is as much an artistic statement as the music within it; a concert is far more than its repertoire.

In most of the Sistema concerts we have attended or viewed on video, we have seen students focusing on playing their music well in traditional concert formats, with little bursts of talking that you sometimes see in traditional youth orchestra concerts.  But we have also seen experiments that deviate from the traditional format.  We have seen improvisation introduced into encores, and student compositions presented.  We have seen mixed-skill ensembles, and mixed genre repertoire.  We’ve seen theatrical flair with costumes and playful challenges.  We’ve seen side-by-sides, and parent ensembles, and even some audience participation.  While some individuals are nervous about deviating from traditional norms, we have never seen an experiment that seemed forced or self-conscious.  Every experiment we’ve seen felt like an authentic emergence of something true and important in Sistema.  Sure, it would be possible to create something bogus, but we haven’t seen it.

To use a canine metaphor, Sistema programs are growing into their large paws.  As puppies, they had large paws that indicated a big future.   We hope that as they grow into their fuller identity, they experiment further with the symbol of their identity in concert.

Here’s three theories to consider.

Traditional excellence – Sistema concerts should be very much like traditional concerts.

Pro: The less-advantaged young people in Sistema programs should have the chance to be just like more-advantaged kids, to show what they can do.  To gain real respect from the power elite (and because it is the format that the leaders know most deeply), we have to show what these young people can do within the form of the standard game.

Con: For many programs, it will be a lot of years until our student orchestras can play as well technically as those of kids who have had lots of musical advantages; maybe they will never play as well as the orchestras in wealthy neighborhoods.  Since we can’t deliver the technical excellence they use to judge quality, we remain second rate in the eyes of the elites and unimaginatives, and evoke condescension rather than respect.

Traditional format with deviations – Sistema concerts should look generally like traditional concerts, but should have distinctive features added that carry Sistema flavor.

Pro: This is the right balance of showing musical strength and adding elements that communicate something non-traditional that is important to the program.  It provides both the confidence within traditional formats that can benefit students, and allows for difference to be a part of it.

Con: First, such deviations have to be really well done to succeed, and usually the non-traditional elements are under-rehearsed and sometimes feel awkward.  Second, the non-traditional bits can seem secondary, even perfunctory, like something stuck onto a normal concert – the message of alternativeness becomes much weaker than the message of traditionalness.

Non-traditional boldness – Sistema concerts should prioritize their highest goals of youth development and find new forms that students “own” with passion.

Pro: A collective effort to create a new kind of concert, one that engages the students as co-creators of something they are passionate about, gives muscle to the social development priority of Sistema.  It takes courage to be different, and if we can be different and excellent, we empower our students even more.

Con: This is hard to pull off, extremely time consuming, and likely to be dismissed as goofy by traditional elites.  Neither faculty nor students know how to do this, so the likelihood of no excellence at all is high.

Obviously, these are not three delineated choices; they represent a spectrum.  Where does your heart, your fondest wish, fall on this spectrum?  Is that where the design of your concert now lives, or should you add some boldness to the mix?

Where do our own views fall on this spectrum? – independent observers get to have opinions too.  Our opinion can be described this way: we believe the best concerts ambitiously embody the Sistema aspirations of the program.  Thus, we feel there must be bold experimentation in every concert, but only as large as can be achieved with some kind of excellence.  (And technical excellence is not the only kind of excellence there is.)  The young musicians need to own the concert as an expression of who they are and what they want to be.  If they are compliant in doing their best in someone else’s concert, the design comes up short in amplifying the power of the program—which is the point of a concert, anyway.  The concert needs to be a symbol for the personal and group aspirations of the students and the larger community, which means it needs to be bold and successful.  And joyful.

There is a final key.  The largest message from a Sistema concert is not the artform of its concert design but the passion communicated through it.  We have been thrilled by Sistema concerts that range from strictly traditional to pretty unconventional when the performers have been on fire with enthusiasm.  When students own the event, whatever it is, it embodies the ideals of Sistema.  When students are dutiful and compliant, the Sistema ideal is not embodied no matter what or how well they play.

Final message: the goal is the students’ genuine enthusiasm and ownership, whatever the format.  Select the format that activates their passion, and make that internal state the number one goal of the program that gets presented in concert. Trust that, invest in that, design for that, strive and play for that.
