How Arts Participation Leads to Civic Engagement

The new U.S. research report Hearts and Minds: The Arts and Civic Engagement (2017, by Nick Rabkin for The Irvine Foundation) finds that arts participation, particularly art-making (more than audience attendance) is strongly related to increased civic engagement.  This connection is particularly potent in adolescence.  Pages 12-15 in the research report focus on this connection in young people: https://tinyurl.com/yd5mgf9f.  A quotation to remember from this research: “People who have built their identities around civic engagement often credit arts experiences as significant to their development.”
